When Christ gave his life
(sacrificial lamb) for our sins - some
people claim that the law was done away with. I disagree totally. I do concede
that we no longer have need to kill innocents to atone for our sins.
Yet, we still today must obey
His commandments and I don't mean just the Ten Commandments. I have often heard
people excuse themselves with "Christ died for our sins and the law was
done away with. "
What is a commandment unless
it is a law? Perhaps you don't percieve
it as law but it still is.
All through scripture God
speaks through His divinely inspired men and/or women for our benefit.
2Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness:
The prophets of old were
instructed to lead us in the ways and "rules" of God. The new
testament Disciples are no less inspired than the prophets of old. God said
through John.. John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Commandments of the Old Testament prophets or instructions of the disciples
in the New Testament - are still law. They still apply! Rules, law,
commandments... Grace is our safety net when we stumble, but it is not to be
used for a game of life roulette.
Rules: 1. a principle or regulation governing conduct, action,
procedure, arrangement, etc.:
2. the code of regulations
observed by a religious order or congregation
Commandments: 1. a command or mandate.
2.(sometimes initial capital
letter) any of the Ten Commandments.
3. the act or power of
commanding.
Law: 1. the principles and regulations established in a community
by some authority and applicable to its people, whether in the form of
legislation or of custom and policies recognized and enforced by judicial
decision.
2. any written or positive
rule or collection of rules prescribed under the authority of the state or
nation, as by the people in its constitution.
3. the controlling influence
of such rules; the condition of society brought about by their observance:
maintaining law and order.
4. a system or collection of
such rules.
5. the department of knowledge
concerned with these rules; jurisprudence:
6. the body of such rules
concerned with a particular subject or derived from a particular source:
John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
What are some of the commandments of the New Testament? Here are just a few....
Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
The following chapter is full of instruction called an epistle ( a letter of instruction) - that are not presented as a maybe but as commandments. A guide just as important as the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament.
1Thessalonians 5:1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6 ¶ Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
11 ¶ Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
16 Rejoice evermore.
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19 Quench not the Spirit.
20 Despise not prophesyings.
21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23 ¶ And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. <
