Matters of the Heart

Proverbs 4:4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

I have studied and read and attempted to memorize scripture multiple times in my life. Often, wondering why I was having such a hard time remembering exact wording; even where the verse is located that I am looking for.

Have you ever done a search for scripture and can't find it? With all the "tools" we have to search with, still hitting a block wall. Without the exact words used, it eludes me.

This morning while "reading" my morning devotion, this Word pricked my spirit and mind. Proverbs 4:4. Specifically, "...let thine heart retain my words...."

It brings another scripture to mind..
Psalms 119:11  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

I have been approaching it the wrong way. Oh, there is nothing wrong with memorizing. Yet, WHEN IT ENTERS THE HEART... when I allow it to be important enough that I allow it in my heart then, I will know HIM and His Word.

First, I do have to read it. Then I have to embrace it. Then it will be in my heart - a vital part of me. Then, and only then will I live it.
It becomes a matter of the heart, not just the mind full of knowledge. It will be soooo much more to me.

God's Word is alive and will bring LIFE to us when it becomes a matter of the heart.
